This comes one day after July 3rd (of course), which is a much less significant birthday - that of Rebuilt Records. I spent much of my time this past weekend away from the world, and most of my thoughts revolved around freedom, independence, and that pursuit of happiness our forefathers declared to be an inalienable right. At some point in the six years since Rebuilt became my full-time activity, I feel like I misplaced these things. And so it is a bit poetic perhaps that here is where we end Rebuilt Records.

I remember July 3rd, 2003 pretty well because I was scared to death. Jana and I arrived that afternoon in Corona, California at the Fireproof house that was to be our office and home. Our furniture and other personal items wouldn't arrive for another week or so (after our moving truck drivers took a "small" detour up to Sturgis, South Dakota for bike week), and so we spent our first night there alone in the dark of our living room, eating In-N-Out burger (because that was the only place we knew to get food), and sitting in office chairs because those were the only things we had to sit on. We sat out on the back patio, listened to the neighbors get drunk, and wondered what in the world we had done.

I kind of miss that feeling. It was scary in that we had committed to do something we had no idea how to do, and we'd essentially put ourselves up to be the ridicule of our families if it didn't work out. But I felt so alive, so free. It was a different world then - literally and figuratively. Musically, the Internet hadn't yet helped make buying music passe´ or leveled the playing field for independents, and there was a very real need for Rebuilt to help artists raise money to record quality albums. As you no doubt know, things today are a bit different. Today, artists can use something like Kickstarter to raise money on their own and manage their own careers through free or next-to-free tools available online. It’s a good time to be an artist and a bad time to be a label.

From the beginning, we wanted Rebuilt artists to have the freedom to grow, create, live healthy, balanced lives, and to take whatever time they needed, but this also created a tension for the label. Rebuilt was born on the notion that for most artists, incessant touring and living on the road is not a healthy way to live, but on the other hand, the label needed our artists to sell enough albums to cover our expenses and pay a few bills. What were we to do, push our friends to “work harder” and “sell more?” Were we to take an increasingly popular stance and sign our artists to 360 deals, essentially collecting money we didn’t earn from every stream of income (like door money from shows)? As we move into a world where music is free, artists will need as much income as they can muster to that they can grow and develop their art into something sustainable. Others certainly feel differently, but we felt to do so would be to become exactly the opposite of what we wanted our label to be.

At the end of the day, Rebuilt was an organization that lived and died on the sale of its recordings, and pinning the blame on “downloading” or “the internet” or whatever is completely asinine. Sometimes the world just changes. I imagine there were a lot of angry scribes in the world when Gutenberg rolled out the movable-type printing press and effectively wiped out their “industry” essentially overnight. But in doing so, he also played a major role in ushering in the Renaissance (look it up). In an age where we’re hell-bent on bailing out all kinds of things, I am of the opinion that sometimes old models need to die off to make room for new and more effective ones. In Rebuilt’s case, we saw no way to retrofit an old model into a new world, at least not at the expense of the people we were actually trying to help.

Certainly, the fact that people are choosing to buy less music these days is a large factor in our decision to close Rebuilt's doors, but that's more of a symptom than the real ailment. While I can deal with losing money (understanding that Rebuilt was always a risk), I became aware that I was in pretty bad shape elsewhere. I was bitter at the way things had been, angry that I didn't do a better job, and hopeless that it would turn around. In truth, I had become a slave to this thing I loved so much. Having no foresight to set boundaries (and not even knowing how), I was never able to break my livelihood from its livelihood. Financially speaking, when Rebuilt took a hit, so did my family, and since we operated as a nonprofit, there was no real way to get back any money we put into it. It follows, then, that as our income from album sales dropped, the financial pressure on the company (and on us personally) only continued to intensify.

Over the last few years, I had come to resent Rebuilt for the ways I had allowed it to drain not only my personal finances, but also my joy, my spirit, and my willingness to want to serve and help others. For a while, I tried to push my nose to the grindstone harder, to raise more money and find some folks to help out; but as the expenses mounted and the income slowed, I found that I just had nothing left when I "hit the gas." This was not how I wanted to live. This was not freedom.

And so freedom is what we have granted our artists. Effective August 1st, all master rights will transfer to the artists themselves and all remaining recoupment debt will be canceled. Our artists are free to do what they will with their recordings with no further obligation to Rebuilt Records. We will continue to offer remaining stock for sale via Rebuilt’s online store as a one-stop outlet for the label’s catalogue and to help pay down our outstanding debt on these recordings, but apart from this, our artists will receive 100% of the income derived from the sales of their recordings. This seemed like the right thing to do - our own little “year of jubilation,” if you will.

Six years ago, we sat in that empty house in Corona because we felt God had asked us to, not knowing how or when it would end. It was a wonderful leap of faith that has changed the course of my life forever. Rebuilt continues to teach me about commitment, community, giving, and service.

In looking back on the days since California, there are certainly things I would do differently. This is to be expected, I guess. And depending on the day, I go back and forth on how I view these six years, whether they were success or failure, accomplishment or defeat. But I feel pretty strongly that each one of our artists is better in some way for having been a part of Rebuilt Records, and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to float alongside them in their journeys. Even six years ago, we made a promise that we would "ride the wave until it hit the beach," and here we are. Just as we felt God calling us to California, it is clear to my heart that he is asking us to put Rebuilt to rest.

Thank you to so many who gave and gave and gave to the vision of Rebuilt Records – financially and otherwise. Because of you, Rebuilt raised nearly $130,000 that went directly to help make the 14 albums baring the Rebuilt hammer. Through your support, our good friend and artist Paul Reeves built a professional-class studio that will continue as a place to document artists’ work and care for them as they grow and develop. Your support helped to encourage the discouraged, and your emails, letters, phone calls, and attendance made us all feel that what we were doing mattered. I could never say thank you enough.

I’ll end here by raising my glass to Jon Black, Micah Dalton, The Goodfight, Paul Reeves, Natalie Moon, and David Herndon, to our family of dedicated donors, and to all who continue to support independent artists; here’s to finding the next wave. It’s been a pleasure.

Jason
Subscribe in a reader

Artist Updates!

This past weekend was a busy one for the artists of Rebuilt Records. In
fact, five out of our seven roster artists played shows both Friday and
Saturday nights in places all over. Here's the recap:

* On Friday, April 3, the Goodfight sold out the venerable Eddie's Attic in Atlanta with our own Paul Reeves and Jason Harwell in tow (not to mention the amazing Sweet Alizabeth and Bonnie Bishop). The Goodfight absolutely killed their set (of which you can see HD video on Facebook... search for it).

* That same night, Micah Dalton and Jon Black (along with Ryan Horne, David Berkeley, and Kim Taylor) stopped in at the Living Room in Muncie, IN as part of the "All The Lads & A Lady" songwriters tour. By all acounts, the boys nailed it. So well, in fact...

* The very next night, Saturday, the 4th, they packed up and headed to Schuba's in Chicago. Word on the street is that somebody shot some video of the show, so look for that (and other tour updates) over at whoisjonblack.com. Currently, you can read about tamales. Yep, you know you want some.

* A little farther down the map here in Athens, GA, the Goodfight was
setting up for a house show extravaganza with the aforementioned Paul
Reeves, Pilot Coat, the Bride, and Jason's powerpop side project, the Warm Fuzzies. After the 'Fuzzies and Pilot Coat tore through their sets at the Springdale Prom (benefitting Young Life),
the Goodfight shut the place down. Well, actually, the police did, but
it was during the Goodfight's set. You can read J.Rich's account (and
see a little YouTube clip of the officer telling everyone to go home)
over at thegoodfightsite.com.

*And it's not over. Micah and Jon (and the gang) are hitting up Athens, Knoxville, Birmingham, Atlanta, and Greenville on the back leg of the "All The Lads" tour this week. If you're in or around those cities, come on out!

<a It just so happens that the downtown Athens Christmas parade will coincide with the opening of the doors at the Melting Point at 6pm. That's okay except the Melting Point is on the parade route, which means there's only one street open to get there.

Fortunately, we have directions, courtesy of the Melting Point:

Parking Directions & Street Closure Information for December 4th

As a portion of Dougherty Street will be closed for the start of the parade route as of 6:15 p.m. We are suggesting everyone enter the Melting Point from the North side of Athens.

If you are traveling from Atlanta via Hwy 316 we suggest you take Loop 10 North and follow until the North Avenue exit. Take North Avenue towards downtown Athens as you enter the downtown corridor turn right onto Dougherty Street and make an immediate right into the hotel.

Other streets affected and information to consider:
Thomas Street (in front of the Classic Center) will be blocked starting at 6:30 p.m.
The Parade will begin at 7 p.m. and staging will begin 30 minutes prior to the start.
         Streets should re-open by 8-8:30 p.m.

If you need additional directions or have questions about the parade route, please do not hesitate to contact Guest Services at 706.549.7020.

Sorry for any inconvenience - see you tomorrow!

Subscribe in a reader

One More Rebuilt Christmas Plug

If you're in the Athens, GA area tomorrow night, I'd love for you to join us at the Melting Point for the 2nd Annual Rebuilt Family Christmas show featuring just about every Rebuilt artist, and a slew of other people we call family delivering tidings of good cheer and their own renditions of familiar (and not so familiar) Christmas tunes. Last year, this was a
special evening, and it really emphasized all the good and great
things music and musicians have to offer our culture. We sincerely
hope you'll consider joining us for this year's edition. Expect some
of your favorite Christmas songs -and probably some you've never heard
of.

Here are the details:
When: Thursday, December 4th, 2008
Where: The Melting Point, 295 E. Dougherty St., Athens, GA 30601
Time: Doors open at 6pm (as does the kitchen) with music beginning at
8pm
Cost: $5 advance/$8 at the door. Advance tickets are available from
the Melting Point here. The show is all-ages.

Who:
All seven Rebuilt artists - Micah, Jon, Paul, Jason, <Jonathan,
Natalie, and David
Our good friends: Nathan Angelo, Ryan Horne, Pilot Coat, the Warm
Fuzzies, and Jim & the Beanstalks

You can see some video from last year at the official Rebuilt YouTube
page here.

* We should also note that we're encouraging folks to bring a canned
food item to help stock the Foodbank of Northeast Georgia. We'll have
collection receptacles on hand, and to say thank you for your
donation, you'll receive a special limited edition sampler featuring
songs from all of the evening's performers!

Hope to see you on the 4th!

Some Nice Things to Say
Recently, some folks have had nice things to say about Rebuilt, our
artists, and our releases. Here's the latest:

Label profile - Southeast Performer Magazine
Reviews of Paul's Winter's Over and Natalie's Short Stories in
Southeast Performer
Review of Jon's Goodbye Golden Age on Americana UK and WayCoolMusic
Reviews of Jason's the.brokenheadphones, David's Into Danger, and
Micah's Pawn Shop on the Phantom Tollbooth.

Jonathan Rich Finishing Up Double EP
Begun over a year ago, Jonathan Rich's double EP, Good & Evil, is
nearing completion and is aiming for a January release. Comprised of
two EPs on one disc, the acoustic Holiday and the rocking We Are Far
Too Easily Pleased, the first 300 copies will be the kind of limited
edition-type things we like to do around here at Rebuilt. You know,
individually numbered, handmade & hand-packed, full of goodies, etc.
You get the idea. We'll have more info as details are firmed, but you
can be among the first to hear the Holiday track "Love" on the Rebuilt
Family Sampler available at the Family Christmas show. And as I'm
typing out this update, I just got a rough mix from Jonathan's rock
recording sessions... ummm... tasty.

Good Ideas for Gifts
And though we're completely skipping over Thanksgiving, we're going to
go ahead and shamelessly remind you that Rebuilt Records has an online
store fully stocked with wonderful albums, stickers, and t-shirts that
make wonderful gifts this holiday season. We recently got some
spankin' new Micah Dalton t-shirts from his Fall tour, but we've only
got a handful, so grab yours now!

And Finally...
Though not a Rebuilt release, Jason's powerpop side project, the Warm
Fuzzies, is set to unveil their debut EP (entitled the Bubblegum EP)
on Tuesday, December 2nd. The official release party will be that
night at the Caledonia here in Athens with Mass Solo Revolt, Farewell
Flight, and our very own Jonathan Rich joining in the fun. The disc is
packaged in a very eco-friendly arigato pak (just like Natalie's Short
Stories disc) and features a comic strip liner note insert and A
SCRATCH AND SNIFF DISC THAT SMELLS LIKE (WHAT ELSE?) BUBBLEGUM. You
can stream the EP and pre-order your copy now at thewarmfuzzies.com.

That's it for now - see you on the 4th!
Team Rebuilt
Subscribe in a reader

Micah Dalton's Fall Tour Dates!

If you live in the eastern United States, there's a good chance that Micah will be hitting a town near you, so come out and support independent music! Tyler James The drive wasn’t bad and the company was glorious. We hit quite a few sun-still-shining-brightly-yet-it’s-raining-harder-than-thought-possible storms, but Jason weathered them like a champ (pun obviously intended).

We arrived at the wonderful month-old home of our sole Rebuilt Lady (that’s what I’m calling her from now on), Natalie Moon and her goofy-and-loveable husband Seth. I’m still confused on the time zones, so I’m no sure what time we arrived—but Natalie welcomed us with open arms (I’ve only met her once, perhaps twice, yet we hugged like old friends. We’re MySpace friends, so that counts right?) and we all quickly fell into easy conversation. Regardless of us all being hungry, we were strangely entranced with one of the Terminator movies—I don’t know which one because I’ve never seen any of them before Friday night. This one had the morphing clean-cut cop in it, and S. Epatha Merkerson from Law and Order, and it was strangely good. We then went out to eat and saw a man walking down the street with an ice cream cart. But back to what you came here for: City Stages 2008!

We woke up to a storm Saturday morning and that is generally not what you want to hear when you know you’re spending the day at an outdoor music festival. It’s especially not what you want to hear when you have friends playing in said music festival. So we hit the snooze and when we woke up again it was sunny and bright! We got ourselves together and headed to downtown Birmingham.

Now, I’ll be honest, I expected a festival of Music Midtown (the now defunct huge music festival that was held in downtown Atlanta) proportions. I, however, was greeted with the fact that this is City Stages’ 20th year and things were a little less structured and a lot more laid back. We finally got in touch with the rock star that is Jon Black and through his frantic last-minute “I gotta get through this, I gotta get through this” mantra (Jon frequently channels Daniel Bedingfield lyrics when he’s getting ready for shows) we were able to meet his lovely wife Lauren near the artist entrance at the back of the main stage. Jason and Jana got their “Artist” passes and Natalie and I headed to the nearest gate to buy our tickets. This is an aside, but you generally expect the people that have Event Staff on their shirt to know things like: How do we get back to the Main Stage? With this stamp you just put on my hand will I be able to leave and then come back in? Where is the Merch tent? However, City Stages is so laid back, they don’t get worried and mired down in the details—but we were very generously handed a map. So Natalie and I headed in the direction we felt we should, went down a street that had no gate and eventually got into the festival through an open chain-link fence. We paid our admission fee, so we feel no shame for entering through an unauthorized portal. We were left with no choice. Surely you understand.

The afternoon was warming up and we finally found our way back to Jason, Jana, Lauren and Jon’s parents. Two p.m. is pretty early in non-camping music festival environments, but a crowd was steadily growing. The stage directly next to the Main Stage was apparently the “Death Metal And I Want To Kill My Dad” section of the festival and we got treated to some lovely and inspiring screams and sweet electric guitar shreds while Jon and the band set up. And even though there was some confusion on who was supposed to change out the name plate sign at the front of the stage announcing what band was currently playing, Jason took his Artist pass, went back stage and took care of some things, and the show began.

And, my friends, you may know the Jon Black that is a singer/songwriter with his acoustic guitar. I, however, got to witness Jon Black, Rock Star Extraordinaire. He looked the part (his signature hat, his beard, sunglasses, jeans, cowboy boots, and of course a plain gray t-shirt) and he sounded even better than he looked. Brad Lyons played a mean electric, while Jon’s regulars of Chesley Smith on bass and Robert Harris on drums kept the energy high. And this is the part where recap readers generally want a run-down of the set list and that’s where I will fail you. I have a horrible memory and I only took still photos. But Jason has it all captured on video and I’m sure he could help you out. Heck, Jon loves his fans—he could probably help out too. I do know he rocked with some new tunes (from his upcoming album Goodbye Golden Age being released Fall 2008 by Rebuilt Records and will be available on RebuiltStore.com says the shameless plug machine) and some of the shining moments there for me were "Mr. Tornado" and "Run With All You Got" (a true foot-stompin’, turn the volume all the way up, take another shot of whiskey and hoot and holler kind of tune). If you haven’t seen him live lately, you need to. End of story. His album October Sky is still terrific, but I think you’re really going to like the path he’s taken. It’s the kind of Southern rock your soul longs for.

The crowd certainly had grown to several hundred after Jon had been playing for a little while, and they especially got into it once he started playing Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.” I saw dancing, I saw head banging, and I saw people capturing parts of his performance either with their camera or with their cell phones. It was nice to see him being appreciated as the great artist and performer we here at Rebuilt have always known he was destined to be. So, congrats on a great show Jon!

After his set, Jason, Jana, Natalie and myself got some lunch and wandered around until Landon Pigg played on the main stage. I realize I’m the only one of our group that had heard of him, but his sweet falsetto and syrupy sweet love songs won everyone over and we were glad to see that even though Landon had a later set time, the crowd at Jon’s show was bigger and more into it!

We then headed over to a side stage where we set up our picnic blanket and settled in for a night full of amazement. First we saw Griffin House, it started to rain, and we wondered what the rest of the evening held for us. But shortly it stopped raining and the stage was then set up for my friends and yours, The Guys With Guitars: Eliot Morris, Ryan Horne, and Rebuilt’s own Micah Dalton and Jon Black. They played a great set, and they had a really impressive crowd. Eliot had quite the high school girl fan base, there was a lot of dancing and jiggling going on and I think people really enjoyed themselves. I even saw people that I didn’t know singing along and that’s a nice feeling—that there are legions of people out there getting our boys’ music and seeking them out at a music festival.

Again I’m bad with remembering set lists, but the boys all played together a terrific cover of the Jayhawks’ “Save It For A Rainy Day” (which Jon has uploaded to YouTube). Ryan played two of my favorite songs of his, “Favorite Dance” and “War For Me” while Micah really got into his groove with the gritty (and I use that with the highest of praise) “The Autobiography of Milton Burroughs.” Jon brought on another new song, “Broken Places,” and the crowd was in a hushed awe. I know because I turned around to see why no one was talking and they were all just looking at the stage and I could tell they were into it. They complemented each other vocally and acoustic guitar-ally and I really think everyone had a great time. Let’s hope some new people got to experience these guys for the first time and either they headed to the Merch tent (if they could find it) or at least remembered their names and headed to Facebook, Virb, Myspace, Blogger, Rebuilt Records or wherever to hear and learn more.

I learned something this weekend: if I was not totally comfortable with the crowd and heat at City Stages in Birmingham, I certainly wouldn’t do well at Bonnaroo. We all decided that the only reason we’d be found at Bonnaroo is if one of our Rebuilt peeps made it there. So here’s to hoping our boys (and girl!) find their way to Bonnaroo and I’ll shave my head (ok, probably not) and grab my tent and be content to be muddy and hot and crammed for days just to support them! That’s how loyal I am, kids. I will be sweaty, muddy, and crazily crammed just for your art. I should get some kind of medal or something. At least a trophy. Maybe a cookie.

Someone make me some cookies.

And then the stage was set for Ingrid Michaelson. She’s a favorite of the youngest Rebuilt supporter, Molly Harwell, so I thought I’d at least give her a listen. She was good and I was intrigued. But then she played for an entire two hours and I quickly went from “Oh, I like this girl” to “Oh, I can’t really feel my legs,” and “Man, I sure am sweaty,” and “I wonder when she’ll stop playing so I can get up to find something to drink.”

Our group then split and some went to see Ben Harper and the Innocent Crimnals (which I hear was a pretty great set), some went to join the uber-crowd to see Al Green and I stayed put for Andrew Bird. There were some really terrific acts at City Stages this year and these are the people that I wished I could have seen: Blind Melon (I have this fascination on how the band can go on and release another album after Shannon Hoon’s death), Citizen Cope, Old Crow Medicine Show, Marc Broussard, Robert Earl Keen, Jon McLaughlin (whom Micah has some summer tour dates with! Check it out!), and of course: The Flaming Lips. I looked for some Flaming Lips footage on YouTube and since video cameras were outlawed, all I got was some kid telling me how great it was with confetti, light sticks and Wayne Coyne singing from inside a bubble.

But back to what I really did experience: I do love me some Mr. Bird and he was a perfect ending to a terrific day. I’m proud of Jon, Chesley, Bobbo, Brad, Elliot, Ryan, and Micah and what they’re doing musically and what they’re doing for Rebuilt and independent musicians.

Let us all do our part in continuing to tell everyone we know about these musicians we love and let’s be a part of making them known.

Thanks for letting me tag-along to Birmingham my dear Harwell’s and hopefully I’ll see you all around sometime soon.

--Anna, Rebuilt Records’ Team Mom and Obsessive Picture Taker—a Documentarian if you will (thanks goes to Jana for that one)
Subscribe in a reader

Jon Black Live At City Stages

Jon performing Neil Young's classic "Rockin' in the Free World" on the City Stages main stage, June 14th, 2008. You can help the song reach the top of those charts by casting your vote here at http://www.indieheaven.com/fanfaves.php. It's simple and easy - and you don't have to sign up for anything. Simply click the link, scroll down to find "A Church or A Brothel" on the chart and click the number of stars beside the song to cast your vote. Let's get David to the top, folks.

He's also being featured on the site as a featured artist, which is awesome.

And some more random info is that the first name we wanted for our label was "Broken Records" because we thought it leant itself to different interpretations, but we couldn't because someone already had. And those people turned Broken Records into IndieHeaven. So there you go. We're happy with Rebuilt...

Subscribe in a reader

Pre-Order Natalie Moon's "Short Stories of Epic Proportion" today!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_t_PNd3AYW1c/SEYL4apPVWI/AAAAAAAAADA/KWGmI4PRCqk/s320/shortstories.cover.low.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207863082953430370" />

click here to pre-order from RebuiltStore.com!

A lot has changed since Natalie Moon released her homespun Rebuilt debut, Many Waters back in 2003, the first being the obvious change to her name (formerly Natalie Miskimon) after her wedding to husband Seth. Also in the interim, Natalie moved from Athens, GA to Birmingham, AL, took a job, led her church's youth choir, and bought a house.

She also kept writing songs, and that brings us to December of 2007, when Natalie convened at DOMUS studios in Cumming, GA to record what would become her Short Stories of Epic Proportion EP. Produced by Paul Reeves, mixed by Andrew Osenga (Caedmon's Call, the Normals), and mastered by Grammy winner Vance Powell (the Raconteurs, Jars of Clay), Short Stories paints the portrait of five years filled with ups and downs, joys and fears, and ultimately, hope. You may have heard Natalie before, but we guarantee you haven't heard her like this.

Featuring contributions from some of the Athens/Atlanta community's brightest talents: Micah Dalton, Nathan Angelo, Jeremy Ezell, Drew Lawson, and others, and built upon Natalie's powerful trademark voice, Short Stories crosses stylistic and thematic borders, always making good on its promises.

But wait, there's more. You can't have an EP titled Short Stories without some actual stories, can you? So in addition to five great songs, you get four narratives, penned by Natalie, and a little something extra. Trust us; it's good. You should listen to it...
Subscribe in a reader

David Herndon Featured In Moue Magazine!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_t_PNd3AYW1c/SBdRC7bDBZI/AAAAAAAAAC4/ghIfXDUaAp4/s320/floor_cover2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194709805947880850" />

Our resident South Georgian David Herndon is today's featured indie artist on Moue Magazine (if that name sounds familiar, Micah was featured there recently as well). I know I do. Good news!!! Our cravings will soon be quenched. During this weekend, flavor will be prepared and served on levels never seen before by man or creature. I am currently in the midst of the first ever "Flavor of the Weekend." You may be asking, what is this Flavor of the Weekend you speak of. Well let me tell you. Jason has realized he's been quite selfish with the flavors, always reserving the pleasure of creating the tasty classics to him. Upon realization, Jason decided to do something about it. This is when the idea of "The Flavor of the Weekend" came into existence. The basic jest of this weekend is to gather friends and musicians at the studios of Paul Reeves and spend time together writing ridiculous songs about a few untrue events. So far we’ve got two songs done with two or three in the works. The music is funny (we think) and the whole weekend has been a blast for everyone involved. Stay tuned. We’ll be serving these treats up soon.
Subscribe in a reader

Another Moving Picture...

Here is a video of Jason and band playing "Afterfall" at Tasty World in Athens. This is a show you do not want to miss, trust me. You may be saying to yourself...I've seen Jason before, what's so special about this show??? Well, funny you should ask. First, Jason wont be up there by himself, he'll have a bassist, drummer, and guitarist playing along. Second, this is the official release show of Jason's new album, "The Broken Headphones EP."
Subscribe in a reader

Jason Harwell...The City Boy

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_t_PNd3AYW1c/RhqPfUPbbyI/AAAAAAAAACg/tpbCICgB5Dk/s320/bronx-795767.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5051507700221570850" />
If you haven't yet, go check out Jason's blog. He just finished up a stint of shows up in the NYC with Micah Dalton, and is heading down to the FLA today for another week of shows. Well they would come out to Rebuilt Record's Bowl-A-Rama on March 31st and bowl for it of course. Here's how it all works:

1) You click here and sign up for a time of you choice.
2) You show up at Showtime Bowling in Athens at 1pm on March 31st ready to bowl.
3) You lace up your bowling shoes
4) You post the highest score of the day
5) You walk home, Wii in hand.

It's that easy folks! And all it cost is $10. To top it off, Rebuilt will be giving away various other prizes throughout the day! Past prizes have included iPods, Rebuilt gear, gift cards, and more!

So come on out, support Rebuilt, and win a Wii!!!

Please visit here for more information.
Subscribe in a reader

Strike a Pose...Vogue!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_t_PNd3AYW1c/RfW442xJ73I/AAAAAAAAACM/_lrdP6fCC-c/s320/erikfashion.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5041138644825010034" />

We wanted to give everyone the heads up and let you know that we've been hard at work designing new t-shirts that will be available shortly. Let us know if you like the direction we're taking the Rebuilt line (also, we may or may not be working on a line of velour sweat suits.)

Peace, Love, and Fashion
-Al
Subscribe in a reader

Broken Headphones Pre Order

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_t_PNd3AYW1c/ReNY4d2rqNI/AAAAAAAAAB4/GAashGSOb9o/s320/headphonescover.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5035966535440246994" />
You know what they say...when opportunity knocks, open the door and smile. Tie Tuesday was started over a year ago when Jason and Erik Kriebel (everyone's favorite ex-intern) realized they needed something more to really kick productivity to that next level. After countless hours, ideas, and deliberation, Erik and Jason agreed on 'Tie Tuesday'. Tie Tuesday has been going strong ever since.

However, Tie Tuesday has gone through a few...I guess we'll say...relocations. You see, as one semester ended and another begun, Erik's class schedule changed a bit. He could no longer go to the office on Tuesdays. Confronted with a such a large quandary, Jason and Erik did what other greats had done before them when confronted with such a problem : Identified, Evaluated, Considered (alternatives), and Overcame. It was decided to no longer honor Tie Tuesday on Tuesday but on Wednesday. Despite moving the day, the tradition retained the name Tie Tuesday. Some may consider this confusing, but we here at Rebuilt Records are sticklers for alliteration (i.e. our company's name). Renaming Tie Tuesday to Tie Wednesday was never even considered. Tie Wednesday just doesn't flow right.

When I was hired to attempt to fill the massive void left when Erik had to step down as Rebuilt Intern (this is in no way an allusion to Erik's stature, just the productive and emotional emptiness that arose with Erik's departure) , the practice of Tie Tuesday on Wednesday was continued. I had heard about the legend of Tie Tuesday before my era with Rebuilt began, but to be honest, I was a bit skeptical. How could such a simple male neck accessory have such a massive effect on the subjects wearing it? Many of you may share these doubts. Just know that this is healthy and natural. Somethings are just difficult to wrap the human mind around. But let me assure you, Tie Tuesday is FOR REAL. When we tie those polyester (can't afford the nice ones) adornments around our necks, Jason and I become an unstoppable force.

Like Frodo Baggins returning to the Shire after his long journey to Mount Doom (that one was for Mr. Jon Black), Tie Tuesdays has once again returned to its home on Tuesdays. I now sit here, adorned with this polyester gift from God, writing this fo you. I hope this has provided you with some explanation and insight into the phenomenon of Tie Tuesday. I invite you now, whoever you are, wherever you may be, to partake in this praxis. Try it out just one day. Experience the sensation of Tie Tuesday!
-Al

(this was written in 24 seconds thanks to the power of the tie).
Subscribe in a reader

Hitchcock's Birds and Jason's Car...

This is a photo of what some birds did to my car in a period of about four hours. I'm not sure what I did to anger the avian population of Athens, but dang, it must have been bad. I did smack a sparrow one time inadvertently with my grill, but I was driving my wife's 4Runner, so how would they know? At any rate, I've been mulling it over in my mind, and birds may just be the ultimate artists - they combine the modernist qualities of Jackson Pollock's drip paintings with the postmodernist use of fecal material as an artmaking tool. The medium is the message, indeed. In fact, I considered driving my car over to the art school and just parking it on the lawn as an installation. I should also note that it took two trips through the car wash with a serious scrubbing session by the car wash attendant (who clearly felt his reputation for spitting out squeaky-clean automobiles was on the line). Thanks, Minute Car wash! - Jason

Subscribe in a reader

Some Jason Harwell Love...

Here is a trailer for "A Moment With You" a movie by Wong Fu Productions. Al here bloging in from Miami.<a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=yDp5IP76PeY"target=new>The Prince of Freshness (Sir Will Smith) wasn’t lying about this city…the heat is truly on. It’s been in the 80’s all week with air as thick as a blanket. You may be asking yourself, “What on earth is Al doing in Miami?” Well…not many people realize I have a very deep-rooted passion for all things salsa, the tasty dip and fiery dance, so when my good friend and friend of Rebuilt Sean McConnell called and asked if I would join him on a week long tour of this of the Miami area (Mecca for all salsa lovers) I couldn’t help but jump aboard. We have been down here playing shows at various colleges around the Miami area. I’ve never experienced life on the road before, but this experience has truly given me an appreciation for those who do this months at a time. There is something a bit strange about sleeping in a different bed every night and not going “home” at the end of the day.

I guess I’ll let you know what we’ve been up to. Sean and I left the Atlanta area Monday morning and drove all day and night to the first destination: Lakeworth, FL. The following day, Sean played about a sixty minute set and we were off to the ‘heated city.’ Sean’s second show (say that five times fast) of the day was smack dab in the middle of Miami at Miami-Dade Community College. After another sixty minute set, we headed back to the hotel to rest up for the next day.

Sean and I woke up the following morning, enjoyed the complementary continental breakfast (thank you Best Western), and headed south for Sean’s only show of the day. (It was during this journey I discovered that Miami is not only the capital of salsa, it is also home of the <a href="http://www.chessmuseum.org/"target=new>World Chess Hall of Fame and Museum. I now believe there is a hall of fame for any and everything.) After the show, we headed up Interstate 95 to Boca Raton, Fl. aka The Land of the Retired. I am now sitting in my swanky free hotel room (thank you Lynn University) writing these words for you. Sean and I have big plans for tonight. I think we’re going to join the locals for a 4 0’clock dinner than hit up the local bingo parlor. Maybe I’ll win a free lunch at the Piccadilly Cafeteria down the street. My fingers are crossed

-Al
Subscribe in a reader

Gearing Up...

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_t_PNd3AYW1c/Ra-fSX-8ASI/AAAAAAAAAAk/wlQnN3BTbFI/s320/phonesidealow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5021407247565848866" />
The year is off to a fast start here at Rebuilt HQ with some new faces, new releases, and new horizons. Yes, that's right, new horizons. Firstly, our lovable, huggable intern Alan Daniel has graduated and is now working at the office fulltime. You should give him a call and say hello. Second, Jason's new EP, Broken Headphones is in the mixing stage under the able hands of Chris Greely (perhaps better known as Solo from the Glitter Twins) who also mixed Alive in the Fall. We're also trying to figure out whether we'll release the next Flavor of the Year compilation, and we'd love your feedback on whether you think we should continue that randomness.

Jon's been busy writing and recording demos for his new EP this summer. We're really liking what we've heard so far, and we think you'll find it equally stimulating. He'll be working over in Oxford, Mississippi with Andrew Ratliff (Sanders Bohlke) at his studio. More to come soon!

Al will be hitting the road next week with Sean McConnell as he heads downs to Miami. Look for his updates here on the blog!

Erik is back in school and is still refusing to get a cell phone. We're all praying that he joins us in the new millennium sometime soon.

As always, thanks for your support!
Subscribe in a reader

A New Era Has Begun

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_t_PNd3AYW1c/Ra6P5X-8ARI/AAAAAAAAAAU/YkimX9eRezI/s320/erik.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5021108850417991954" />

Let me be the first to welcome you to the mildly anticipated and rarely talked about Rebuilt Records blog. We here at Rebuilt decided that there were not enough bloggers in the world today, so taking a page out of Erik “The landline” Kriebel’s book, we decided to test out the blogging waters. Through this blog we hope to provide you with an inside look at the happenings here at Rebuilt Records. This blog will be updated regularly with everything from Rebuilt Artist News to Jason’s top five Valentines Day date locations. So stay tuned (I’m not sure if you even tune into a blog, but I couldn’t think of any better clichés, stick with us…we are new at this) and stay classy.

-al
Subscribe in a reader
